Man, don't be such a party pooper. Apart from what's wrong, he also says what's right, and how to improve the process:

One note: "Students come to work in a permanent lab setting, rather like a corporate open-office maze of desks and dividers."

That's the way design courses are run, or at least the ones I have taught in. Students go to the workshop to work on their projects, and lectures and classes merely serve as punctuation to the workday.
